Jack Parsons
(1914â1952)
There is a crater on the dark side of the moon called the âParsons Crater,â named for the American rocket engineer, chemist, rocket propulsion pioneer, and Thelemite John Whiteside Parsons. Perhaps itâs a stretch, but surrounding the crater are five smaller cavities spaced quite neatly so that if one were to draw connecting lines between them, a near-enough equilateral pentagram would be formed. A coincidence of passing amusement, perhaps, but when considering some of the dramatic headlines that followed Parsonsâs death, such as âVentures Into Black Magic By Blast Victim Revealedâ and âSlain Scientist Priest In Black Magic Cult,â it should be clear how deep the symbiosis between magic and physics ran in Parsons.
Parsons was born in Los Angeles on October 2, 1914. His parents, Marvel H. Parsons and Ruth Virginia (née Whiteside), had moved to California from their native Massachusetts the previous year. The irresistible attraction of sunshine and prosperity called them, like millions of others, since the gold rush of the 1840s had opened up California to Americans. Both were in their early twenties and had been married barely a year when they made the moveâalthough the motive was not only sunshine but also Ruthâs frail physical and psychological state following the stillbirth of their first child. Los Angeles would be a place for her to regenerate, and since both Marvel and Ruth came from prosperous middle-class backgrounds, some of the more testing obstacles before them were smoothed by a financial security. They moved into a large house just off Wilshere Boulevard on what was then Romeo Street but is now S. Catalina Street in Koreatown (Juliet Street still exists, a block west). L.A. was then an unremarkable midsize city, but with the installation of its first aqueduct in 1913 it was destined to experience a population and culture explosion of astonishing scale. During the years of the Great War, rich and poor, the adventurous, eccentric, and criminal arrived in L.A. in droves. The city bloated, incorporating surrounding districts, such as Hollywood, that attracted the attention of a band of New Yorkers with an interest in shooting cinema year-round in the clement weather. The steady Protestant nature of the town, once famous for beef and little else, was swept away by a wave of obscure religious sects. Christian Science, Theosophy, Spiritualism, secular utopians, various Eastern religions, Marxists, and others set up camp in L.A. Racketeering was big business as the Anti-Saloon League struggled to contend with the waves of vice coming to the city under blazing neon lights. Brothels sprang up opposite churches in an awkward arrangement of urban convenience. This particular aspect of L.A. would have a devastating effect on the Parsons family.
